The Distractionary

A is for Armadillos Who Lead You Astray

(or Take You on Adventures)

Intro:

Sophie is a blue-eyed day dreamer with a colorful and wild imagination…

On her birthday her mum gave her a Distractionary to help her focus on the occasion.

She wandered off to play with her pup by the lake,

while her friends waited with her presents and cake!

Today she packed the velvet book with its gold spine

so Sophie would avoid all the distractions she’d find…

Beginning: (Sophie with her stuffed animal Armadillo Maddilly (in lieu of trolls since they’re trademarked)

Sophie was in the place between sleep and dreaming. That place where you see people fly and wild animals singing…

“Sophie, wake up, it’s getting late! We have dragons to slay and pancakes to make!”

The sun is shining a square of light and Sophie’s room is getting too bright. Her eyes start to open and the haze starts to clear. The day has begun but the distractions are near…

Sophie, groggy, finally sits up in bed. Her pajamas are crumpled and dreams still roll round in her head. Green peacocks sip tea and frogs are reading books, while her stuffed armadillo is giving her looks.

Madilly sits on her belly and shakes her silly.

“Sophie, up, up. You have to wake! We have school-math and science, and things to create.”

“No, no, not yet…“ Her eyes slightly close, “I’m swimming in a bluey gold pool and it’s getting deep. I can wake up later. I need much more sleep.”

Madilly stomps on Sophie with padded paws.

“Sophie, breakfast is waiting and it’s getting cold. I want red pepper eggs and your mom’s blueberry rolls.”

“OK Madilly. I’ll wash my face and wash your tail, brush my teeth and scrub your scales.

I just have to shake out my brain and stretch my legs and then we can eat our scrambly eggs.

Sophie skips to school, Maddilly perched on her shoulders. They wonder if maybe the ants by her feet or the birds flying by are going a more interesting way…and if maybe THEY’re having a more interesting day…

“We could follow that row of pink flowers or that bluejay that’s screaming…”

“No, Sophie I think you’re still dreaming. Focus, now focus, dream on your dream time. You’re getting distracted and I think we are late. I don’t want to miss school or make your class wait.”

“But that blue frog is calling my name. He’s changing colors while dancing over that stream. Surely no one would mind if I take a minute to follow that dream?”

“I can practice frog colors and bird calls today. I can learn numbers counting trees and swinging on 10 branches that sway…”

“Oh no Sophie, we’re lost and you’ve simply forgotten your way!”

Sophie puts Maddilly on the ground to see where they are. She opens her backpack and her Distractionary for all the distractions so far.

“Oh so many things, Maddilly, I’ve been thinking. I was following my thoughts and singing your songs. Dancing with animals where I didn’t belong. Maybe later my teacher won’t mind if I dream in my head.”

“Or maybe later when you’re back in bed.”

Ending still in process…
